Started on December 8, 2019

Basic knowledge of legionella and a strategy of legionella management is vital for those who own or control a commercial premises.  Legionellosis is a collective term for diseases that are caused by bacteria know as legionalla. This includes the most serious strain, “Legionaires disease” but also the less serious condition ‘pontiac fever’ and ‘lochgoilhead fever’. Where a patient catches pneumonia, the disease can be fatal. Although anyone can be susceptible to legionella, there are factors that place some people into higher risk categories. These are

  • people over 45 years of age
  • smokers and heavy drinkers
  • people suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease
  • anyone with an impaired immune system

Basic legionella management is a vital part of maintaining commercial properties. Legionella is spread through water systems and people contract it by inhaling droplets of water that contain the bacteria. Current legislation set out by the Health and Safety at Work Act, along with the HSE’s updated code of practice, known as L8, state that companies and building owners have a legal duty to manage legionella and so, if you are in control of a commercial premises, you have a legal responsibility to understand the risks associated with legionella.  This includes employers and landlords.

This interactive training course will help you to identify risk factors so that you can manage these risks by setting up a system to monitor and control water and cooling systems.  This will ensure your commercial premises is safe from legionella and that you comply with the relevant legislation.
