Across society, the prevalence of mental health conditions has not risen significantly in recent years but the nature of mental health conditions have changed in some areas. Stresses around finances and employments are often responsible for the onset of some conditions, along with individuals trying to deal with a perceived overwhelming level of expectation being put on them.

There has also been a rise in suicidal thoughts and self harm as ways people with mental health issues use for coping.   In the The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, it is reported that as many as 1 in 6 people experience a common mental health problem, such as phobias, depression and PTSD at any given time.

According to the World Health Organisation, as many as one in four adults in any year will experience some form of mental health problems. That is an incredible 25% of the population. This brings into focus just how vital it is to raise awareness of some of the most common forms mental illness. From an economic perspective, we can further emphasise the impact that mental health problems have on business using some statistics

  • 80 million working days are lost per year due to anxiety and depression.
  • The current cost of mental health problems is around £105 billion pounds a year.

This course won’t make you an expert on mental health issues, but it will give you an awareness of the common conditions. This will  help you to spot the signs that someone may be struggling and provide you with some advice of ways you can offer support.

Who is this course for?

This training course is primarily intended for health care workers and other who work in the social care sector. It will help them recognise when someone may be susceptible to mental help challenges and ways to offer practical support.

The course is also a useful training for employers and managers to help to raise awareness on just how widespread mental health challenges are and how susceptible any of us could be.   The training gives information on ways to maintaining wellbeing and promote good mental health.

Diagnosis of Mental Health Conditions

Mental health conditions are broken down into two areas for the purpose of social care. This enables health care professionals decide how to access resources on behalf of the individual. This training illustrates how some mild and serious mental health conditions are diagnosed and the symptoms that are identified.

Severe illnesses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, where symptoms are so extreme that the person can’t perform day to day activities.

Mild or moderate illnesses include anxiety, depression, where the person is still able to carry out day to day activities, obsessive compulsive disorder, mild to moderate personality disorders, and drug or alcohol misuse.

Support Strategies

Mental health services base treatment on psychosocial interventions, which for people with severe mental illness usually include medication, and possibly talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

As a care worker, there is a lot you can do to support your clients. The training is designed to compliment the medical interventions and therapy by discussing ways to support and help those who are experiencing the mental health problems.
