Asbestos is probably the most dangerous building material ever used. Every year thousands of people get ill and die because of exposure to asbestos. It was widely used by the construction industry up until the year 2000.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR), 2012 is the legislation we look at in this course. This legislation applies to employers, employees and duty holders and covers all work with asbestos-containing materials. The legislation states employers must ensure employees who work with asbestos receive adequate information and training. This includes maintenance workers and contractors who may come into contact with or disturb asbestos.
Risk Management for Asbestos
Asbestos awareness for architects, surveyors and designers covers all the material in the asbestos awareness training. As architects and surveyors also need to be particularly aware of the possibility of disturbing asbestos when they embark on a project, particularly in old buildings. For this reason, “Asbestos Awareness for Architects” includes the planning stage a project.
Architects should also be aware of previous asbestos surveys undertaken and ensure inspections were thorough prior to any demolition. Discovering asbestos during the planning stages reduces the risks of exposure to asbestos. Attempting to manage asbestos risk after a job is underway can delay progress and add to costs.
Candidates will learn how to recognise asbestos-containing materials and where it is likely to be found. You will learn about the properties of asbestos and the different types of asbestos. Crucially, the course to take you through the steps to take to minimise risks of exposure.
